BOSTON — A monstrous offensive performance by
Hunter Marks from the Hartford men's basketball team led to the graduate student earning America East Player of the Week honors on Monday. The weekly distinction is the first for Marks, and the first for a Hawk this season.
A forward, Marks poured in a career-high 31 points last Wednesday to lead the Hawks to a 78-71 road win at Sacred Heart. Playing the full 40 minutes after missing back-to-back contests against Saint Francis (PA) and Central Connecticut, he notched his first career 30-point effort after going 9-of-11 from two-point territory and a perfect 10-of-10 effort from the free-throw line.
Marks put together a complete game against the Pioneers, stuffing the stat sheet with eight rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks. The Phillip Island, Australia native scored 25 of his game-best 31 points in the first half as Hartford outscored Sacred Heart by a 51-43 margin over that stretch to earn the victory.
Marks' 31-point effort marks the highest offensive output for a Hawk this season, and the most points scored by a Hartford player since
Malik Ellison had 31 against UAlbany on Jan. 25, 2020.
He enters the week ranked third on the team — and 11th in the America East — in scoring with a career-high 13.1 points per game. Marks is also first in the league in free-throw percentage (.857), second in field goal percentage (.549) and sixth in blocks per game (1.1).
Hartford — which had its final non-conference game at Cornell on Tuesday get canceled — begins the defense of its 2021 America East Championship on Sunday when it hosts Stony Brook. The league opener is set for a 2 p.m. tip from Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
