Earlier this month the University of Hartford men's basketball team won its first-ever America East Championship and punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament! The team's first trip to March Madness brought widespread attention to the Hawks, sparking excitement on campus, throughout Connecticut, and the country. Get to know the "Neighborhood" – National and International Coverage
As Hartford Head Coach John Gallagher explained in his multiple media appearances, if you're a Hawk, you're part of our "neighborhood."
During their March Madness run, Gallagher and his players were interviewed nearly 100 times by television, radio, newspaper, and online media outlets, including acclaimed basketball analysts Seth Davis, Clark Kellogg, Greg Gumbel and Wally Sczerbiak.
Hawks dominate the local spotlight
The excitement and support for the Hawks' neighborhood was also on display in Hartford, along with the extensive coverage in local media.
Howie the Hawk was featured on Fox 61's morning show where he showed off his dance moves with Hawks flags lining Pratt Street in the background.
Hartford Athletics student-athletes Meghan Anderson, Abby Nash, and Nyrik Antoine shared their Hawks spirit with NBC Connecticut's Mike Massaro. "You could hear all the cheering from across the quads and it's great seeing them do so well, especially in these challenging times," Anderson said of the team's America East Championship win.
NBC 30 also profiled a championship celebration that was three decades in the making, while Fox 61 shined the spotlight on the Hawks' America East Championship and historic matchup against the No. 1-seeded Baylor Bears in the NCAA Tournament.
University of Hartford President Greg Woodward appeared live on Colin McEnroe's morning show on WNPR, discussing what it means for the University to be in the national spotlight.
Hawks in the Spotlight
- Hartford graduate guard Traci Carter's fight against violence was picked up nationwide by the Associated Press, appearing in media outlets in Arizona, California, Delaware, Denver, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, San Francisco, Seattle, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Washington, and West Virginia.
- Carter's story garnered national media attention, including a profile in The Washington Post.
- The Asian Journal featured guard D.J. Mitchell and the fulfillment of his life-long dream to make the NCAA Tournament.
- The Anchorage Daily News also profiled senior Matt Hobbs, one of two Alaskans to play in the NCAA Tournament.
- Austin Williams named MVPÂ in Hawks' America East Championship victory.
- WDVM celebrates hometown star Briggs McClain going dancing with the Hawks.
