Thrasher Homers Twice in Baseball's Saturday Split at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hartford baseball team Split its doubleheader against UMBC on the road, 10-3 and 8-5 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
 
John Thrasher led the offense on the day with two homers and five RBI, as the Hawks moved to 7-7 on the season and in the America East, while the Retrievers moved to 10-8 on the campaign and 5-8 the America East. 
 
GAME ONE: HARTFORD 10, UMBC 3
After two scoreless innings, the Retrievers struck first with three runs in the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead. However, the Hawks knotted the game in the top of the fourth, powered by Kyle Hawes' three-run homer. Thrasher followed later in the inning with a three-run shot of his own to push Hartford ahead, 6-3. 

Leading 8-3 in the sixth with a runner on, Zachary Ardito and Derek Tenney delivered doubles in the inning to push the Hawks ahead to a 10-3 victory.
 
GAME TWO: UMBC 8, HARTFORD 5
Tied 1-1 entering the third inning, Thrasher put the Hawks ahead, 3-1, with a two-run bomb over the left field fence. However, UMBC responded with four runs in the fourth to push ahead, 5-3.

Hartford tied the game at 5-5 after Derek Tenney launched a two-run shot to left in the sixth. The Retrievers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to push ahead 6-5. UMBC added three more runs in the seventh, eventually holding on for a 8-5 win.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Senior Nicholas Dombkowski (2-1) got the start and took the no-decision in game one, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits 
  • Dombkowski added four strikeouts in the outing
  • John Johndrow (1-0) earned the win after tossing 2.1 scoreless  innings in relief
  • Thrasher and Hawes led the offense with three RBI apiece in the opener
  • Ardito and Tenney plated a run apiece as well
  • Sophomore Ken Turner (0-1) got the start and got the no-decision after giving up five earned runs on six hits
  • Freshman Colin Blake (0-1) logged 4.0 innings in relief, surrendering two earned runs while striking out two
  • Thrasher and Tenney provided the offense in the nightcap with a two-run homer apiece
  • Senior Drew DeMartino added an RBI in the second game

NEXT ON TAP
Hartford will be back in action on Sunday April 11, when it closes the weekend series against UMBC with a doubleheader. First pitch from Alumni Field is set for noon.
