Baseball Drops Both in Sunday Doubleheader at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hartford baseball team dropped both contests in its doubleheader against UMBC on the road, 14-6 and 13-7, on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the losses, the Hawks fell to 7-9 on the season and in the America East, while the Retrievers improved to 12-8 on the campaign and 7-8 the America East.

GAME ONE: UMBC 14, HARTFORD 6
The Hawks struck first in the opening inning after John Thrasher scored on an RBI single from Derek Tenney to take an early 1-0 lead. However, UMBC responded in the second inning with a grand slam to jump ahead 4-1.

Trailing 8-1 in the fifth, Thrasher and Tenney both launched solo homers to cut the deficit to 8-3 for the Hawks. Despite UMBC pushing ahead 9-3, Tenney drilled a two-run double to the fence, followed by an RBI double from Tim Dickson cut the Hartford deficit to 9-6. However, it wasn't enough as the Retrievers held on for the 14-6 victory.

GAME TWO: UMBC 13, HARTFORD 7

The Hawks struck first as Thrasher sent the first pitch of the game into the stands to put Hartford ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Tenney crushed a solo homer to left to double the Hawks' lead. Later in the inning, with two runners on, Daniel Burnett powered a three-run homer over the left field fence to give Hartford a commanding 5-0 lead. However, UMBC countered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 5-5.
