Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader at Maine

ORONO, Maine. – The Hartford baseball team split its contests in its doubleheader against Maine on the road, falling in the opener, 11-0, before bouncing back to win the nightcap, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.
 
With the split, the Hawks moved to 8-10 on the season and in the America East, while the Black Bears moved to 12-9 on the campaign and 7-6 the America East. 
 
GAME ONE: MAINE 11, HARTFORD 0
After two scoreless innings, Maine struck for five runs in the third off a grand slam and solo homer to take a 5-0 lead. The Black Bears added four runs in the seventh and eventually held on for the 11-0 victory.
 
GAME TWO: HARTFORD 7, MAINE 0
The Hawks struck first in the fourth inning after Derek Tenney scored on a fielder's choice by Treymayne Cobb Jr. to take a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Donnie Cohoon got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push ahead 2-0. Hawks added a run in the fifth backed by a Nik Pagan triple, followed by a Maine error.

Leading 4-0 in the sixth, Drew DeMartino drilled a two-run double to right centerfield to give the Hawks a commanding 6-0 lead. Tenney immediately followed with an RBI single to plate Demartino to increase Hartford's lead, eventually holding on for the 7-0 final.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Freshman Colin Blake (0-2) got the start and took the loss in game one, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits 
  • Blake added a career-high five strikeouts in the outing
  • Senior Nicholas Dombkowski (3-1) got the start and earned the win in the nightcap, tossing seven shutout innings, allowing five hits while racking up 10 strikeouts
  • DeMartino led the offense with two hits and two RBI in the nightcap
  • Tenney and Pagan added two hits apiece
  • Cobb Jr. and Tenney contributed an RBI apiece
 
NEXT ON TAP
Hartford will be back in action on Sunday April 18, when it closes the weekend series at Maine with a doubleheader. First pitch from Mahaney Diamond is set for noon.
