Baseball Splits Friday Home Doubleheader with UAlbany

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford baseball team split its contests in its doubleheader against UAlbany at home, walking-off with a win in the opener, 4-3, falling in the nightcap, 10-1, on Friday afternoon at Fiondella Field.
 
With the split, the Hawks moved to 9-11 on the season and in the America East, while the Great Danes moved to 13-14 on the campaign and 11-9 in the America East. 
 
GAME ONE: HARTFORD 4, UALBANY 3

After a scoreless first, Hartford struck first for a run in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on the corners, junior Donnie Cohoon hit into a fielder's choice to plate Tremayne Cobb Jr. from third to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead. 

Hartford added to it's lead in the third inning, following a sacrifice fly from Nik Pagan that plated Zachary Ardito. Later in the inning, with Derek Tenney standing on second base, Tremayne Cobb Jr. laced a single to center to score Tenney, pushing the lead to 3-0.

With the Hawks holding a three-run lead into the seventh, James Judenis was called in to secure the victory. However the senior gave up three runs in the inning, as UAlbany came back to knot the contest at 3-3.

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the third, Cobb Jr. stepped to the plate and reached first on an infield single to third base, scoring Tenney to win the game, 4-3.

 
GAME TWO: UALBANY 10, HARTFORD 1
The Great Danes struck first for a run in the first inning to jump out to an early 1-0 advantage. The Hawks responded in the bottom of the first to knot the score at 1-1. John Thrasher led the inning off with a triple, before coming home to score after Drew DeMartino's RBI groundout. However, UAlbany countered with a run in the second to take a 2-1 lead.

The Great Danes added five runs in the top of the fourth to push its lead to 6-1, eventually holding on for the 10-1 victory.

NEWS AND NOTES
  • Senior Nicholas Dombkowski (3-1) got the start and took the no-decision n in game one, tossing six shutout innings, allowing three hits on the afternoon 
  • Dombkowski added four strikeouts in the outing
  • Judenis (1-0) earned the win in relief
  • Cobb Jr. led the offense with two hits and two RBI
  • Pagan and Cohoon added an RBI apiece in the opener
  • Freshman Colin Blake (0-3) got the start and took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work
  • DeMartino drove in Hartford's lone run in the nightcap loss
 
NEXT ON TAP

The Hawks return to action on Saturday, April 24, when they close its four-game series against UAlbany with a doubleheader. Saturday's contests will be held at Dunkin' Donuts Park, with first pitch of the doubleheader set for noon and tickets can be purchased HERE.
