Volleyball Falls to Northeastern in Season Opener

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.. — Freshman Camryn Luginbuhl delivered a team-high nine kills and 16 digs, but it wasn't enough for the Hartford volleyball team as it fell in straight sets to Northeastern on the road in the season opener at the Boston College Invitational Friday evening. 

The Hawks fall to 0-1 on the season with the defeat, while the Huskies improve to 1-0 to open their 2021 campaign.
 
NORTHEASTERN 3, HARTFORD 0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-20)


SET ONE: After falling behind 3-0 to open the set, the Hawks countered with six straight points to hold a three-point lead. However, the Huskies responded with a 13-5 run to take a 16-11 lead that they would not look back from, eventually holding on for the 25-14 set win.

SET TWO: The two sides traded points to an early 10-10 tie in the set before the Hawks pushed ahead, 14-11 to force a Northeastern timeout. Out of the timeout, the Huskies outscored the Hawks 7-4 to tie the contest at 18-18 in the set, forcing a Hartford timeout. Trailing 20-18, Hartford scored five of the next seven points, capped by a kill from freshman Sophie Paspal to push the Hawks ahead 23-22. The two sides played to a 24-24 tie until the Huskies scored back-to-back points to seal the set win.

SET THREE: The Hawks jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, capped by back-to-back kills from Luginbuhl and sophomore McKenna Reiswig to force a Northeastern timeout. Out of the timeout, Hartford pushed its lead to 13-6 behind a kill from senior Valerie Diede and two kills from Luginbuhl. However, Northeastern battled back and eventually stole the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-0.

HARTFORD NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Luginbuhl led the way with nine kills and 16 digs in her collegiate debut … senior Alex Lucero added 16 digs … sophomore Morgan Galligan compiled 20 assists … Evelyn Gonzalez led Northeastern with a match-best 11 kills.
 
NEXT ON TAP
The Hawks will be back in action on Saturday (Aug. 28), when they take on hosts Boston College at 1 p.m., followed by Sacred Heart at 5 p.m.
