WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Senior midfielder Derek Waleffe capitalized on a pair of set pieces, netting two goals off corner kicks, as the Bears downed the Hartford men's soccer team, 2-0, on Friday night on Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium.

It marked the first loss at home for the Hawks (0-2-1), who played Holy Cross to a 1-1 draw in their season opener. Brown improved to 1-0 on the season, in what marked the Bears' first game since 2019.

Waleffe's first tally came on an assist from Will Crain, giving Brown a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. The Hawks kept things close the rest of the way, before Waleffe struck again in the 57th minute off the assist from Kyle Gee and Malcolm Johnson.

Hartford controlled play in the second half, outshooting the Bears 8-2 after halftime, but couldn't get on the board.

Hartford will travel to face Boston College for a Labor Day matchup on Monday. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. from Newton Campus Field in Newton, Mass. It will mark the Hawks' first game against an ACC opponent since Hartford hosted Syracuse on Oct. 18, 2016.
