NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Freshman
Camryn Luginbuhl delivered a team-high 11 kills, but it wasn't enough for the Hartford volleyball team as it fell in straight sets to Syracuse on the final day of competition at the Yale Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Hawks fall to 1-5 on the season with the defeat, while the Orange improve to 6-0 to open their 2021 campaign.
SYRACUSE 3, HARTFORD 0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-15)
SET ONE: The Orange came out the gates with a 6-0 run to force a Hartford timeout, building its lead to as high as 11-1 before the Hawks scored their first point. The deficit was deemed to be too much for Hartford, as it eventually fell 25-15.
SET TWO: Syracuse maintained momentum into the second set, jumping out to an 11-4 lead to force a Hartford timeout. Out of the timeout, the Orange built its lead to 16-5 en route to a 25-12 set win.
SET THREE: The two sides played to a 4-4 early set tie before Syracuse went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead and force a Hartford timeout. The Orange built its lead to 15-6 en route to the 25-15 set win and match victory.
HARTFORD NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Luginbuhl led the way with 11 kills and added seven digs … senior
Alex Lucero added 16 digs … sophomore
Morgan Galligan compiled 22 assists … Marina Markova led Syracuse with a match-best 14 kills.
NEXT ON TAP
Hartford will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 10, when they travel to Kingston, R.I. for the URI Invitational to open against Merrimack at 4 p.m. The Hawks then face host-team URI on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m., before concluding the tournament with a 4 p.m. contest against Rider.
