WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior
Briggs McClain was Hartford's leading scorer for the fourth game in a row with 19 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Brown as the Hawks fell 65-51 on Sunday at Chase Arena at Reich Family Pavilion.
BROWN 65, HARTFORD 51
The two teams traded baskets early in the first half, with McClain hitting a three-pointer just a minute in to give Hartford its only lead of the game. However, it was Brown that took over from that point.
The Bears opened up a double-digit lead thanks to a 10-2 run over the first 10 minutes of the contest. It was capped off by Paxon Wojcik's three-pointer at the 10:34 mark.
Two minutes later, Perry Cowan hit a three of his own to give the Bears their biggest lead of the half at 18-7. From that point forward the Hawks would slowly chip away and were able to go into the break down five with a score of 25-20.
Inside the paint is where the Hawks did most of their damage, outscoring the Bears down low, 12-10, in the half.
Coming out of the break, the two teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the second half, meaning the Hawks were unable to close the gap.
Brown's offense really woke up in the second half. Following a Malachi Ndur miss just over a minute into the second stanza, Brown would make its next 10 shots from the field and opened up a 17-point lead. The Bears shot 64 percent from the floor in the second half compared to Hartford's 44 percent.
The Hawks did their best to close the gap with
Kurtis Henderson scoring most of the points in the final eight minutes, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
