Austin Williams Scores 1000th Career Point as Men's Hoops Defeats Maine, 75-65

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Senior Austin Williams scored his 1000th career point as the Hartford men's basketball team took down Maine, 75-65, on Wednesday night. Williams paced the Hawks with a game-high 21 points.
 
Hartford (8-16), improves to 6-6 in America East action, while Maine falls to 5-20 overall and 2-12 in the league.
 
HARTFORD 75, MAINE 65
Maine started the game strong, taking an early 5-2 lead with 15:32 left in the first half. Moses Flowers would tie the game up with a three-pointer a few seconds later, however the Black Bears responded with a 5-0 run to take a 10-5 lead. Maine continued its hot start, extending the gap to seven, 17-10, at the 11:34 mark. The Hawks would fight back, responding with a 7-0 run of its own, fueled by buckets from Jared Kimbrough, Traci Carter and Austin Williams, tying the score with 10 minutes left in the half. The two sides continued to fight back-and-forth playing to a 30-30 tie after Flowers threw down a dunk with less than four minutes left. A Flowers three-point play followed by a Williams jumper gave the Hawks a four-point cushion, but Maine scored the final basket of the half, cutting the Hawks lead to 37-35 at the halftime break.
 
Hartford would be the ones to start the second half hot, going on a 5-0 run, capped of by a pair of Williams free throws to take a 42-35 lead. The two teams would trade baskets, until another 5-0 Hartford run, featuring a Carter step-back jumper, gave the hawks a double-digit advantage, 53-42. Maine would pull back within single digits, 55-48, at the 8:43 mark, but Williams would make history during the next play. With a driving layup at the 8:18 mark, Williams scored his 1000th career point. The Black Bears would not go down easy, coming back within four, 62-58, with 5:24 left in the game. Williams would end Maine's run, scoring three-straight points, before a Carter four-point play, saw the Hawks reestablish a double-figure lead. The Black Bears would try and mount a late comeback, but a pair of Carter free-throws iced the game for the Hawks, giving them a 75-65 victory.
