Baseball Drops Series Opener Against UMBC

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman Ryan Knight recorded a team-high two RBI as the Hartford baseball team dropped its series opener against UMBC, 17-5. The Hawks drop to 1-13 overall and 1-3 in the America East, while the Retrievers move to 9-12 overall and 2-2 in conference play with the win.

UMBC 17, HARTFORD 5
UMBC took advantage of early Hartford miscues, scoring three runs on three errors in the opening inning. Trailing 8-0, Hartford responded in the bottom half of the second as Kevin Koziol launched his fourth home run of the season, getting the Hawks on the board.  After UMBC tacked on five more in the top of the third, the Hawks used a two-out rally to get another run on the board. Koziol drew a walk to start things off followed by a single from Brett Anderson.  With runners on first and second, Daniel Burnett hit a single down the middle, plating Koziol and cutting UMBC's lead to 13-2. Tremayne Cobb Jr. added another run with a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks kept their sun streak going into the fifth, adding two more after a Ryan Knight single to center field brought home Logan Cole and Anderson. The deficit proved too much however, as UMBC took game one of the series, 17-5.
