WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Tremayne Cobb Jr.,
Derek Tenney and
Kyle Hawes recorded three hits each to pace the Hawks as the Hartford baseball team dropped game two against UMBC, 16-9. The Hawks drop to 1-14 overall and 1-4 in the America East, while the Retrievers move to 10-12 overall and 3-2 in conference play with the win.
UMBC 16, HARTFORD 9
After UMBC scored in the top of the first, the Hawks immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning. Tenney singled to left field, advancing to second on an error by the left field. In the next at-bat, Cobb Jr. doubled to center field, tying the game at 1-1. However, UMBC went on to score six unanswered runs to take a 7-1 lead.
Martin Chavarria cut the Retrievers momentum in the bottom half of the third, recording his first home run of the season. The Hawks looked tack on more runs, loading the bases, but UMBC prevented Hartford from cutting ito it's lead any further.
The Hawks bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth inning. After
Logan Cole drew a walk, Tenney ripped a, RBI triple to right center, plating Cole. Cobb Jr. would score Tenney in the next at-bat, cutting UMBC's lead to 10-4. However, the Retrievers reestablish a 14-5 lead heading into the final two innings. The Hawks wouldn't go down without a fight though, plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Holmes,
Ben Maycock hit a two RBI double to right center, scoring Cobb Jr. and Holmes. After two quick outs,
Noah Rivera started a two-out rally with an infield single, putting runners on the corners.
Devin Kellogg, who entered the game in the eighth inning, singled through the left side, plating Maycock and cutting UMBC's lead to 14-7.
The Retrievers scored twice in the top of the ninth, but the Hawks tried to mount a last-minute comeback. Tenney lead things off with a single, eventually reaching third on a wild pitch. After Holmes drew a walk to have runners on first and third, Maycock recorded an infield single, scoring Tenney. Pinch Hitter
Brett Anderson stepped up to the plate hitting a ball deep enough into the infield to bring home Holmes, despite getting out on the play. However, the Haws could not bring home any more runs as UMBC took game two of the series, 16-9.
