VESTAL, N.Y. – The Hartford baseball team fell in heartbreaking fashion this afternoon, dropping a 9-8 decision in extra innings to Binghamton. After tying the game in the eighth inning, the Bearcats took home the win in walk off fashion in the 10th. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 3-19 overall and 2-8 in the America East while the Bearcats move to 6-18 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
BINGHAMTON 9, HARTFORD 8 (10 inn.)
It didn't take long for the Hawks to get on the board, as Hartford took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning. With two outs,
Derek Tenney drew a walk before
Tremayne Cobb Jr. triple to right center, plating Tenney and giving the Hawks the lead. However, Binghamton would respond with three unanswered runs, taking a 3-1 lead after two innings. The Bearcats would tack on two more in the fifth, increasing the gap to 5-1. Hartford responded with a run of its own in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Cobb Jr. would ground out to short, but it was enough to bring home
Donnie Cohoon and cut the Bearcats' lead to 5-2.
Hartford's offense would explode in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back-to-back singles from
Kevin Koziol,
Devin Kellogg and
Martin Chavarria kick started the Hawks' momentum. In the next at-bat,
Logan Cole would reach on a fielder's choice, but his ball hit to the shortstop allowed Koziol to score, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Cohoon would then step up, singling through the right side, plating Kellogg and bringing the score to 6-4. After Tenney drew a walk to load the bases, Cobb Jr. came up clutch once again, ripping a bases clearing double to right center, giving the Hawks a 7-6 lead. However, Binghamton would score twice in the bottom half of the inning to retake a 8-7 edge.
Hartford didn't let Binghamton hold the lead for very long, tying the score at 8-8 in the very next inning. After Kellogg and Chavarria reached on base to start the inning, a perfect bunt single from Cohoon allowed Kellogg to score and knot the game up at 8-8. The score line would hold at the end of nine innings, sending the game to extras. Binghamton would be the ones to strike though, winning the game in the bottom of the 10th, 9-8.
