The early portion of the game started out with both teams getting good chances of opening up the scoring. In the top of the second, Noah Rivera would lead off with a single followed by a Maycock drawn walk to get two runners on base for Hartford. After moving over a base via a sac bunt, Martin Chavarria would be hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Hawks, but Hartford could not capitalize leaving the bases loaded. The Black Bears loaded the bases themselves in the bottom half of the inning, but Ryan Dee forced a flyball to the outfield, ending the inning and keeping the game scoreless through two.

Maine opened the scoring with two runs in the third, but Hartford quickly responded in the top half of the fourth. Maycock would single to the outfield, before stealing second base to get in scoring position. With the next at-bat, Burnett ripped a single back up the middle, plating Maycock and cutting Maine's lead to 2-1. The Black Bears would go on to establish a 7-1 edge heading into the seventh inning. Burnett would come up big once again for the Hawks, hitting a no-doubt two run homerun in the top half of the seventh, cutting the gap to 7-3.

Hartford kept the momentum going into the eighth, scoring five runs. Kevin Koziol and Derek Tenney lead off the inning with back-to-back singles, setting up Tremayne Cobb Jr. Cobb Jr. found the gap in left center, bringing home Koziol and cutting the gap to 8-4 with an RBI double. Maycock kept the run parade going, launching a double of his own to right center, plating Tenney and Cobb Jr. and pulling the Hawks within two, 8-6. Burnett would follow up the double with yet another clutch at-bat, launching his second two-run homerun of the game, tying the score at 8-8.

However, Maine would respond with a run in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 9-8 lead into the ninth. The Hawks would look to equalize the score in the top of the ninth as Cobb Jr. and Rivera hit back-to-back singles with two outs, but the Black Bears would escape with a 9-8 victory.
