MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Hartford women's soccer team traveled to nearby Middletown, Conn., Saturday to match-up against Wesleyan. The Hawks walked away victorious by a score of 3-2 after
Imani Jenkins and
Makaela Montgomery-Williams combined to score Hartford's three goals. Hartford improves to 6-1-1 on the season, while the Cardinals fall to an even 2-2.
HARTFORD 3, WESLEYAN 2
Abigail McCarthy would be called into action early making five saves within the first five minutes of the game. Noticing the need for a goal,
Ishani Sharma found Jenkins in front of the net after a Wesleyan turnover where she would score her 10th goal of the season to give Hartford an early advantage. However, the Wesleyan offense was able to respond just 45 seconds after the opening goal to tie the game back up at one. In the 18th minute, the Cardinals took the lead when Dani Milovanov deflected the ball into the back of the net on a cross from Grace Devanny. Throughout the latter portion of the first half play was quiet, going back-and-forth while Hartford looked to grab an equalizer heading into the halftime break trailing 2-1.
Coming out into the second half,
Christina Stone found Jenkins darting up the field to set up a scoring opportunity for Montgomery-Williams who lobbed a shot over the Cardinal goalie to level the game at two in the 55th minute. McCarthy and the Hawks defense would be called upon once again to make key saves, facing 12 shots in the middle 15 minutes of the second half. In the 70th minute, Hartford's defense was able to make a clutch team save and clear an excellent scoring opportunity attempted by Wesleyan, leaving the game tied at two. In the fading minutes of the contest, Jenkins would ricochet a shot off the goal post before capitalizing on the rebound for what would prove to be the game winning goal in the 85th minute, sealing the victory for Hartford by a score of 3-2.
