RADFORD, Va. – The Hartford baseball team dropped its season opening doubleheader against Radford on Saturday. The Hawks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Highlanders improve to 4-7 on the campaign.
GAME ONE: RADFORD 4, HARTFORD 2 (7 inn.)
The Highlanders came out hot in the first game of the day, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings. Radford extended its lead to as much as four runs in the bottom of the third before Hartford would respond with one run in the top half of the fifth.
Tyler Holmes got the fifth inning started with a single to right field before
JJ Romatzick would reach base on a fielder's choice that would result in Holmes being thrown out at second. With
Martin Chavarria up at the dish, Romatzick stole second base and got himself into scoring position. Chavarria then drilled an RBI single through the middle of the infield to bring home Romatzick and get the Hawks on the board at 4-1. After entering the game in relief for
Alec Couture in the sixth,
Manny Corporan looked to get his teams bats back in the dugout to mount a comeback. Answering the call, Corporan set down the side in order. Holmes would pull one back for the Hawks, launching the teams first home run of the season in the top of the seventh. The deficit would prove too much however, as Radford took game one of the doubleheader, 4-2.
GAME TWO: RADFORD 13, HARTFORD 2
Hartford would strike first in game two, taking a 2-0 lead after the opening frame.
Derek Benzinger led off the game with a single through the right side. After a wild pitch advanced Benzinger into scoring position,
Michael Alvarez capitalized and drove home the opening run of the game with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. Alvarez would go on to steal second base and cross the plate after an RBI single was laced up the middle off the bat of
Jake Santiago. However, Radford would immediately respond with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first before adding five more in the second. The Highlanders tacked on two more runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to earn the victory over Hartford.
