Baseball Splits Series Opening Doubleheader at Coppin State

HANOVER, Md. – The Hartford baseball team split its series opening doubleheader against Coppin State on Saturday after taking game one, 3-1, before coming up short in game two, 4-3. The Hawks move to 2-15 on the season while the Eagles improve to 9-17 on the year.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 3, COPPIN STATE 1
Hartford wasted little time getting the offense rolling, taking an early 2-0 lead after the opening frame. The Hawks two-run first inning was fueled by an RBI single from Noah Rivera and sacrifice fly by Derek Benzinger. Rivera's single drove home JJ Romatzick who reached base earlier in the inning via a leadoff walk while Devin Kellogg who came around to score on Benzinger's fly ball lined a single into the right center field gap. Coppin State would cut the deficit in half after plating a run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double off the bat of Angel Colon. However, Romatzick would extend the Hawks lead to 3-1 and give Hartford's starter Alec Couture a sense of breathing room with an RBI single, scoring Joseph Woronick on the play. Coppin State would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth but Hartford's reliever's Manny Corporan and Joe Dooley would slam the door shut and wrap up the Hawks' 3-1 victory.

GAME TWO: COPPIN STATE 4, HARTFORD 3 (7 Inn.)
The Eagles got the scoring started in game two, taking an early 2-0 lead after the first. Hartford responded in the top of the second as Martin Chavarria laced an RBI double into left center field. Chavarria's double drove home Ryan Knight who reached base a batter earlier drawing a four-pitch walk. However, Coppin State would tack two more run on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second with a two-run triple off the bat of Brett Curran. After three scoreless innings, the Hawks would get two runs back in the sixth after Harrison Engstrom's solo blast over the right field fence. Knight would follow Engstrom's homerun with an RBI double to the opposite field, plating Woronick and closing the gap to just one run heading into the seventh. Despite the late effort to mount a comeback Hartford would come up short, falling to the Eagles, 4-3.
