WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford baseball team dropped its series concluding doubleheader to Fairfield on Saturday. The Hawks drop to 2-24 on the season, while the Stags improve to 21-12 on the year.
GAME ONE: FAIRFIELD 5, HARTFORD 2
Hartford's ace
Robert Chaney and Fairfield's starter Colin McVeigh were locked in an intense pitcher's duel through the first four innings of the game. After stranding the bases loaded in the first, Chaney would settle in on the mound, striking out five batters over the next three innings to keep Fairfield off the board. However, the Stags would open the scoring in the top of the fifth with one run before tacking on three more in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead. The Hawks would respond in the bottom of the seventh with two runs off a
Joseph Woronick two-run blast over the left field fence, cutting the deficit to 4-2. However, Fairfield would add one more run on in the ninth inning to take game one, 5-2.
GAME TWO: FAIRFIELD 8, HARTFORD 2 (6 Inn.)
Fairfield wasted little time getting the offense rolling in game two, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead after the first two innings. After a scoreless third inning, Hartford would pull two runs back in the fourth after back-to-back solo blasts from
Ryan Melendez and
Harrison Engstrom, cutting the gap to 6-2. However, two runs in the fifth would extend the Stags lead to 8-2 prior to the game being called midway through the top of the sixth inning due to inclement weather.
