VESTAL, N.Y. – The Hartford baseball team dropped its series opener, 10-3, at Binghamton on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks drop to 2-18 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 15-10 on the year.
BINGHAMTON 10, HARTFORD 3
Hartford wasted little time getting the scoring started, taking an early 1-0 lead after the opening frame.
Martin Chavarria kicked off the first inning with a single into left-center before
Noah Rivera lined a double down the left-field line, moving Chavarria over to third base. With two runners in scoring position and one out in the inning,
Ryan Knight laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Chavarria for the contest's first run.
However, Binghamton gained its first lead of the game scoring three runs in the bottom of the second before tacking on one more in the third. The Hawks would respond and pull one run back in the top of the fourth after
JJ Romatzick drove home
Devin Kellogg on a ground out to the shortstop. Kellogg had reached base earlier in the inning with a leadoff single through the left side of the infield.
Hartford starter
Alec Couture would silence the Bearcats bats in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of punch outs to set down the side in order and give his offense a chance to score, trailing by just two. The Hawks would pull within one run of the Binghamton lead in the fifth at 4-3 after Chavarria raced home on a sacrifice fly to shallow right field from Kellogg. Unfortunately, the Bearcats would regain their early momentum scoring three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth to take home a 10-3 victory in the series opener.
