Three Former Hawks Highlighted at US Senior Open Championships

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Three former Hartford men's golf team members Jerry Kelly, Tim Petrovic, and Patrick Sheehan were all highlighted by NBC Sports at this past weekend's U.S. Senior Open Championship, held at Sentry World in Stevens Point, Wis.

Among the three former teammates Kelly – playing in his home state – earned a top finish of third overall with a score of 4-under. Kelly's third place performance marked his fifth consecutive top-10 finish at the event and second-best mark since the 2019 U.S. Senior Open Championship where he concluded the event tied for second at 13-under.

Compiling a career stroke average of 75.9 during his collegiate career, including a 74.7 average in 1987-88, Kelly paced the Hawks to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances during his career. Kelly tallied 27 top-10 finishes with the Hawks, including four first-place, seven second-place, six third place and one fifth-place performances.

Inducted into Hartford's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002, Kelly was a four-year member of the Hawks men's golf team from 1986-89. During his time at Hartford, he was a four-time All-New England performer, earning First Team All-New England honors in 1985-85 and again in 1988-89. In addition, Kelly received NCAA All-Region distinction in 1986-87.

Petrovic, a Glastonbury, Conn., native was a four-time All-New England selection and an All-American in 1988, a season in which he carded one of the lowest single season stroke averages in school history (73.85). His crowning individual achievement came at the 1987 Yale Invitational, where he earned medalist honors and shot a round of 64 that ranks top-three in program history.

Sheehan, from Warwick, RI, joined the fray for the 1987-88 season, the only year during which all three golfers were on the same team. Over his four-year career, he earned medalist honors at six tournaments and compiled a stroke average of 76.47. Sheehan was a three-time all-conference selection and an All-New England pick in 1990. His winning total of 205 at the 1990 West Point Invitational also stood as the school's 54-hole scoring record for 17 years until it was broken in 2007.

Kelly, Petrovic, and Sheehan each led the Hawks to NCAA appearances in every season during their tenure. After their success at Hartford, all three moved on to professional careers on the PGA Tour. They became only the sixth trio at the time from the same college team to play on the PGA Tour at the same time.
