WSOC suffers first loss of season

The University of Hartford women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday, falling to Division I Merrimack, 2-1, in non-conference action on Al-Marzook Field.

The game was delayed two hours due to heavy rains early in the day.

Senior Imani Jenkins scored Hartford's lone goal of the game, finding the back of the net in the 28th minute. Jenkins' equalizing goal came 61 seconds after Merrimack claimed its first lead of the game. It was her team-high fourth goal of the season.

After the two teams went to halftime tied at one, the Warriors netted the game-winner in the 67th on a goal from the top corner of the box that hit into the upper 90 and fell into the net.

Sophomore Mira Mahmoud (0-1) entered the game in the 42nd minute following an injury and made three saves on four shots. It was the first extended minutes of her career. Sophomore Sejal Johnson finished with two saves on three shots in her 43 minutes of work.

  • Freshman Kathleen Brush finished with a team-high five shots, two of which were on goal.
  • Jenkins added two shots on goal and senior Leah Barbieri added the other shot on goal for the Hawks.
  • After not taking any corner kicks in the first half, Hartford managed four corner kicks over the last 45 minutes of the match.
  • Of the 12 fouls committed in the game, Hartford was called for just four of them.
  • The Hawks came into the game ranked first in the Massey Ratings.
  • In the latest United Soccer Coaches poll, Hartford entered the national poll 12th and first in the region.
