Hawks Blow by UMass Dartmouth 8-0

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Hartford dominated the UMass Dartmouth Coirsairs tonight winning 8-0 in an exciting match. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Hawks came out swinging, shots from graduate students Imani Jenkins (Middletown, Conn.) and Christina Stone (Glastonbury, Conn.) were held short by the defense. The Hawks soon took the lead early with a goal by sophomore Reese Sadler (Newington, Conn.) in the 20th minute, assisted by Jenkins. Not so long after freshman Angela Chávez (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled the lead with a low-left shot in the 21st minute, assisted by junior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.) and Stone. Sophomore Kathleen Brush further extended Hartford's lead with a goal in the 43rd minute, making it 3-0. UMass Dartmouth had a few chances, with Rita's shot missing to the right in the 44th minute as the Hawks took a 3-0 lead into the second half. 
  • The second half started out strong, and the Hawks continued the scoring spree. Jenkins scored her first goal of the game making it her 12th of the season. Brush added to the board in the 50th minute, making it 5-0. Junior Lindsey Metcalfe (Palos Verdes, Calif.) found the back of the net in the 56th minute and finds her first goal of the season, putting the Hawks up 6-0. Goal assisted by Opdenbrouw and Stone. The star of the second half was freshman Alexa Frendo (Whitby, Ontario) who scored twice once in the 58th minute and again in the 66th minute putting the Hawks up 8-0 to finish the Corsairs off.

"I mean, there's no better feeling than winning big", said graduate student Christina Stone (Glastonbury, Conn.). "I'm just really proud of this team and proud of how far we've come, there's still work to do, but I think we're in a great place after tonight."

Inside the Numbers:
  • Stone broke the program-record in assists with her 33rd and 34th of her career. Christina passed Kim Lemere to become the all-time leader. 
  • Brush and Frendo each tabbed two-goal games in the win.
  • Opdenbrouw dished out two assists.
  • Jenkins notched a goal and an assist while Metcalfe, Chávez and Sadler all added scores of their own. 
  • Junior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.) picked up the shutout win in 61 minutes, while junior Mira Mahmoud (Storrs, Conn.) came in relief for the remaining 29 minutes. 
Up Next:
The Hawks will take on Curry College on Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. start.
