Men's Basketball Defeats Colby Sawyer With A 77-71 Finish

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford men's basketball team picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday evening defeating Colby-Sawyer 77-71.

Rapid Recap:
  • The Hawks opened the first half with a swift three off the hands of freshman Troy Santos (Taunton, Mass.) in their first possession. Hawks continued their opening run putting up five more points with key plays by sophomore Kaosi Chijioke (Atlanta, Ga.) and sophomore Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Chargers got their first points of the match off of a foul against Petion. Score stood at 7-2. Both teams exchanged a few fouls of their own in the next few minutes without any score. Junior Drew Stack (Madison, N.J.). knocked down a three, and made the next play happen nabbing a defensive rebound for the team. The Chargers found their stride with big plays by Jenkins and Grant to close in on the Hawks 22-19. Freshman Reggie Selden (Franklinville, N.J.) broke their streak with big three off a turnover play, Hawks continued to pull away with less than four minutes of play 30-22. The Chargers found themselves in some foul trouble late in the first half giving us the remainder of our points in free throws to bring us to the half 35-31, Hawks lead.
  • The Chargers and Hawks set up the fans for an exciting second half, both teams trading point for point early. Petion and Santos driving to the hoop with power, 40-35 lead over the Chargers. Cullum, Grant, and Martin were the Chargers that demanded control of this second half and brought the score even at 42-42. Sophomore Jaylen Brown (Baldwin, N.Y.) decided to turn this game around taking the ball from the Chargers hands and slamming it home with a powerful dunk that brought the crowd to their feet. Hawks take control, continuing a seven point run to force the Chargers into a timeout, 53-48. Brown knocked down a three-pointer off the hands of Petion to give the Hawks their largest differential of the half, 58-50 with 11 minutes remaining. Selden found his rhythm with a six point run tossing up back to back jump shots, 68-58. Hawks maintained their double digit lead over the Chargers for the next few minutes as we approached the two minute mark. The Chargers fought until the final whistle as Jenkins knocked down a three pointer off of a turnover closing the Hawks lead to just four. Santos made sure this win was secured knocking down both free throws to claim victory over the Chargers 77-71. 

Post Game Press:
"This all goes back to what our coach preaches in our program being ready for when the opportunity is given to you and  was waiting for my opportunity and I took it tonight," said sophomore Jaylen Brown (Baldwin, N.Y.). "There is an exciting aspect of having a young team we play with a lot of energy were all hungry, it is alot of our first time to playing college basketball so were eager to play every game we step on the floor and just give it our all."

Head Coach Aaron Toomey said "I am very proud of the guys in the way they battled it wasn't exactly how we wanted it be drawn up but our guys battled through the tough times. We came out of the second half and threw that next punch, and it was exciting to see our guys trust the process and continue to battle."  

Inside the Numbers:
  • Brown nabbed a season-high 17 points (5-7 FG, 1-3 PT, 6-7 FT) to go with two rebounds. Petion was second to lead the Hawks with his season-high of 16 points (6-11 FG, 0-2 3PT, 4-6 FT) and four rebounds. Selden put up an impressive 21 points for the Hawks (7-11 FG, 2-5 3PT, 5-6 FT) along with two rebounds. Santos added 10 points (3-6 FG, 2-3 3PT, 2-4 FT) along with five rebounds
  • The Chargers Bryson Jenkins lead their team with 16 points (5-11 FG, 4-10 3PT, 2-4 FT) and two rebounds.
