WEST HARTFORD, CONN. - The Hawks faced cross-town Trinity College Thursday evening at home. Hartford came into the game following a victory over Colby-Sawyer College only two nights prior. Trinity was able to come out on top as they would take the cross-town match-up 79-54.
Rapid Recap:
- The Bantams of Trinity would kick things off early, Drew Lazarre would hit a three-pointer followed by another from Will Dorion, as the Bantams would find themselves up 6-0 early on. Another couple of Trinity buckets extended their lead to 13 after another Lazarre three, coming off a Hartford turnover. Trinity's lead would extend to 18 before the Hawks were able to make their mark on the game. Freshman Troy Santos (Tauton, Mass.) opened the scoring for Hartford as he would knock down a 3 point jumper, and draw a foul, after converting the and-one Hartford would trail 18-4 after the first seven minutes of action. The Hawks would soon find their footing as Santos would knock down another three-pointer and Hartford's second unit would contribute with a couple of quick buckets from freshman Reggie Selden (Franklinville, NJ) and freshman Cooper Galdenzi (Clinton, Conn.). The Hawks would continue to work from behind as the half continued, junior Drew Stack (Madison, NJ) would hit two three-pointers late in the half cutting the lead to 19, 41-22. A series of free throws, and a second chance opportunity for Trinity would finish out the first half as Hartford would trail 46-24 after the first 20 minutes of play.
- Trinity would again open the scoring in the second half of action off another second chance opportunity. An and-one for Jarell Okorougo would extend the Bantam lead to 30 after six minutes of play in the second frame (61-31). Selden would draw fouls on back to back plays for the Hawks knocking down all four free throws and cutting the Trinity lead to 26 (65-39). Sophomore Jared Similen (Brunswick, ME) would come in and score back to back points in the paint for Hartford as they continue to try and cut into the deficit, trailing 67-43 with 5:30 to go. Hartford would continue the late game spark as freshman Jaron Broomfield (Bronx, NY) would knock down a triple followed by a turnaround jumper from the elbow, putting the Hawks down 77-51 with 90 seconds left. A three-pointer from sophomore Jaylen Brown (Baldwin, NY) would be the Hawks last basket of the night as they wouldn't be able to narrow the gap and fall to Trinity 79-54.
Inside the Numbers:
- Trinity finished the first half with only three turnovers.
- Hartford lost the second half by only three points 33-30.
- Hartford's Bench outscored starters by six points.
- Selden lead the Hawks in scoring with 10.
