Hawks Drop Home Opener to Clark University 76-64

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford women's basketball had its home opener on Friday night falling to Clark University by a 76-64 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Cougars jumped ahead 5-0, but a triple by sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) stopped the run. Sophomore Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) added a three of her own to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 3:07 to play in the quarter. Clark would answer with an eight-point spurt to lead by nine. freshman Mackenzie Hohulin (Plymouth, Mass.) and freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.) each netted a basket as the Hawks trailed 16-10 headed into the second. 
  • After the Cougars scored to push the lead to eight Hartford had a good flurry with five-consecutive points highlighted by a finish by freshman Mikaela Williams (Windsor, Conn.). Clark would push the lead right back to nine points, but the Hawks continued to fight with freshman Maddie MacCannell (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished a layup on an assist by sophomore Kendall Rieman (Chicago, Ill.) and a pair of shots at the charity stripe by Hohulin. Sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) netted a three and after another free throw by Hohulin the Hawks trailed by a 26-23 margin. Clark would respond pushing the lead to 33-23, but O'Hare ended the first half with a triple with five ticks in the second quarter to cut the deficit to seven headed into the break. 
  • The Hawks came out flying to kick off the second half as Rieman kicked things off with a layup, followed by five-consecutive points for Sabia. Sophomore Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) gave the Hawks a 36-33 lead with a tough and-one finish. Clark would take the lead back at 42-40. After a pair of free throws by Williams, the Cougars would strike again using a 8-3 closing run to take a nine point advantage into the final 10 minutes. 
  • Rieman kicked off the fourth quarter with a bucket to start a 6-2 run as the lead was cut to just six points. The teams would trade baskets with the Cougars slowly extending the lead to 71-61 with 4:01 to play. O'Hare netted a bank three to cut the lead to seven, but Clark would answer with a three of their own sealing the 76-64 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Rieman filled the stat sheet with four points (2-3 FG), eight rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals. Sabia led the offensive output with 12 points (3-10 FG, 2-7 3PT, 4-4 FT) to go with two assists and two boards. Hohulin notched 11 points (3-8 FG, 1-3 3PT, 4-6 FT) and three rebounds, while O'Hare ended the night with 11 points (3-6 FG, 2-4 3PT, 3-4 FT) and three rebounds as well. 
  • Kailey Rios led the Cougars with 19 points (6-14 FG, 5-9 3PT, 2-2 FT), three assists and three rebounds. Catherine Antwi added 18 points (7-14 FG, 0-2 3PT, 4-4 FT) and six rebounds.

The Hawks will travel to Chicago next week to take on Concordia University Chicago on Tuesday with a 7:00 PM ET start.
