Hartford Drop First Contest of Chicago Trip to Concordia University - Chicago

RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Hawks women's basketball team fell to 0-4 on the season after dropping their contest to Concordia University - Chicago on Tuesday night by a 56-51 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Cougars got the first basket of the game, but a quick finish by freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.) got the Hawks on the board. Concordia would extend the lead to 11-4 stopped by a back-to-back threes for sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) followed by a finish by O'Hare to give Hartford a 12-11 lead. O'Hare added to the run with another shot from behind the arc as the lead was 15-13 headed into the second quarter. 
  • The Cougars evened the score and eventually took a 16-15 lead to kick off the second quarter, but a freshman Maddie MacCannell (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished a layup to put Hartford back in front. The teams traded buckets, but a finish for MacCannell followed by a three-pointer by sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) had the Hawk lead at 26-21. Marchesani extended the lead to eight points with a bucket and free throw, before a finish for sophomore Kendall Rieman (Chicago, Ill.) pushed the lead to double-digits. Kira Holliday beat the buzzer with a three as the Hawks led 33-26 headed into the break. 
  • Concordia tried to battle back in the early going of the third quarter, but sophomore Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) and freshman Mikaela Williams (Windsor, Conn.) each had finishes to keep the lead at 39-31. The Cougars closed the quarter with the next six points to cut the lead to 39-37 as the teams entered the final 10 minutes. 
  • The teams were tied with 8:03 to play, when Marchesani netted her third three of the night to give Hartford the lead. The Cougars came back with four-straight points to hold a one point lead with 4:44 to play. Sydney Nimsakont hit a huge three followed by two charity stripe shots to extend the lead to 51-45 with 2:22 to play. MacCannell finished a layup to keep the Hawks in striking distance. Marchesani hit a deep floater followed by a steal and lefty layup by Williams to cut the lead to 53-51 with 17 seconds to play. Concordia responded with an open layup to put the game away and hold on for the win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Marchesani led the Hawks in scoring with 15 points (5-8 FG, 3-4 3PT, 2-3 FT) to go with two rebounds. MacCannell tallied 10 points (5-8 FG) and nine rebounds. O'Hare netted nine points (3-8 FG, 1-4 3PT, 2-2 FT) to go with nine rebounds and a block, while Williams added four points (2-4 FG, 0-2 FT), three steals and three assists. 
  • Nimsakont paced the Cougars with 19 points (3-15 FG, 2-11 3PT, 11-13 FT) and three rebounds. Alisyn MacGregor added 18 points (5-9 FG, 0-2 3PT, 8-10 FT) nine rebounds and a steal. 
  • The Cougars benefited from a hometown whistle going 22-26 from the charity stripe, while Hartford went 7-13 from the line. The Hawks won the rebounding battle 39-27 in the loss.

The Hawks will take on Illinois Institute of Technology tomorrow to conclude the Chicago trip with a 4:00 PM start.
