The University of Hartford baseball team failed to get a hit in nine chances with runners in scoring position and suffered a 2-1 extra-innings defeat to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Nichols College Tuesday at Fiondella Field.
Despite the difficulties with runners in scoring position, Hartford was still one strike from securing the win. However, the Bison came through with an opposite field single to bring the equalizing run home from second.
The Bison tallied the go-ahead run in the tenth inning on a safety squeeze.
Hartford had a chance in the bottom portion of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. However, the threat ended with a game-ending double play.
The game remained scoreless for five innings until sophomore Ryan Melendez reached on a two-out error, scoring senior Jake Santiago, who reached on an error.
Sophomore Joe Dooley delivered impressive performance, the best of his career, hurling a career-best seven innings. He allowed no runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
