Kubis and Santiago Record a Pair of RBI

BRISTOL, R.I. - The University of Hartford baseball team dropped a pair of games to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Roger Williams University on Saturday. 

  

GAME ONE: ROGER WILLIAMS UNIVERSITY 7, HARTFORD 4   

  • Hartford did the majority of its damage in the second inning, scoring three of its four runs in the frame. The first three hitters reached as senior Jake Santiago, who opened the inning with a double, scored as freshman Zaynn Godbee singled to left and an error allowed the run to score. 
  • Freshman Stephen Kubis and Peyton West added RBI in the third inning. Kubis finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. 
  • RWU scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning and three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Roger Williams added two more insurance runs in the eighth inning.
  • Sophomore Michael Featherstone (1-1) took the loss in relief, allowing five runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings. He added three strikeouts in the outing.   

    

GAME TWO: ROGER WILLIAMS UNIVERSITY 9, HARTFORD 5 (9 INN.)  

  • Santiago was a home run shy of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles, a triple, and two RBI as Hartford dropped the nightcap of the twin bill.  
  • He opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first inning, bringing home sophomore Jackson Ciccone. His double in the seventh inning also scored Ciccone. 
  • RWU took control of the game with six runs combined in the third and fourth innings, opening up a 6-2 lead. RWU had their best inning in the fourth, recording four runs. Two innings later, they scored three more runs to close the game off with a 9-3.  
  • Ciccone finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a double, while sophomore Cameron Boardman was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. 
  • Luke Rier (2-2) allowed six runs – five earned - on nine hits over five innings with five strikeouts. 

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES:      

  • After today's doubleheader, Ciccone now leads the team with a .340 batting average, leading the Hawks in hits in game two   

  • Santiago is currently riding a five-game running streak and a 13-game hitting streak.   

  • Godbee has started the last four games for the Hawks and has recorded two or more hits in all four of those games. 

  • Freshman Jon Melarzcik scored a career-high two runs for the Hawks in the first game. 

  • Freshman Peter Morrissey made his third appearance of the season, tossing 2.1 innings of hitless baseball with a pair of strikeouts. 

  • Freshman Alex Angelidis hasn't allowed a run in three of his five appearances. 

  • Kubis, who hadn't earned in a game since April 2, started both games of the doubleheader. He had two previous starts prior to today. 

  

WHAT'S NEXT:      

Hartford (6-19-1, 3-6 CCC opponents) will have a quick turnaround as they hop on the road to play CCC opponent Curry College in Milton, Mass. for a Sunday doubleheader.
