The University of Hartford baseball team split a doubleheader against Commonwealth Coast opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology Saturday at Fiondella Field.
GAME ONE: WIT 5, HARTFORD 4
- Wentworth took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning, two of which coming on an error. However, the Hawks fought back and had the tying run just 90 feet away when the last out was recorded.
- Hartford took advantage of some Leopard wildness, loading the bases thanks to seven walks. They scored a pair of runs on a Jeremy Mangiamel walk and Payton West hit by pitch, but the game ended on a long flyout by freshman Josh Kaplan.
- Hartford scored two runs in the first inning as freshman Alek Popovich hit a home run on the second pitch and freshman James Hinspeter, who bunted the ball and made it to first base then scored on a sophomore Jeremy Mangiameli groundout.
- Wentworth scored runs in the second and fourth innings to tie it 2-2.
- Starter Colin Blake (0-4) pitched for five innings, allowing six hits and four runs and throwing one strikeout.
GAME TWO: HARTFORD 3, WIT 2 (8 INN.)
- Hartford snapped its 11-game winless streak by defeating WIT, 3-2, in the second game of the doubleheader.
- Popovich started the game by recording the first run with help from senior Jake Santiago. Santiago grounded the ball helping West advanced to second sending Popovich home. That wasn't it for this duo; in. the third inning, Santiago hit a single, recording yet another RBI of the game, sending Popovich home for his third run of the day.
- The Leopards tied the game after scoring a run in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.
- Sophomore Michael Featherstone secured the victory by getting the final four outs of the game. He got the final out in the eighth with the tying run in scoring position and the go-ahead run on first. He struck out three while allowing just one hit.
- Junior Luke Rier, who got the no-decision, turned in his best performance of the season with a season-best five innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and three strikeouts.

- The second game of the doubleheader marks Hartford's first win since March 11.
