Morgan's 79th Minute Winner Lifts Hawks Over Mitchell College

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Hartford men's soccer team grabbed a late non-conference win on Monday night defeating Mitchell College by a 2-1 final. Senior Kellijah Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica) netted the winner in the 79th minute to put the Hawks on top.

Rapid Recap
  • The Hawks had two chances in the first 23 minutes as freshman Kyle Theobald (Sandyston, N.J.) and senior Devan Jessop (Ashaway, R.I.) each had shots on target saved by Jesse Jenkins. The Mariners got in trouble with a yellow card on Juan Pina in the 35th minute leaving the Hawks with a dangerous free kick. Graduate student Alex Quinones (Bedford, N.H.) lifted the kick to find Morgan for the eventual opening goal in the 37th minute to give the home team an early 1-0 advantage. Mitchell had one chance in the first half, but Sean Khan lifted it high.
  • In the second half the Mariners equalized as a deflection bested the Hawks keeper to even the score. Erik Portillo was rewarded the goal in the 62nd minute. Senior Dylan Jessop (Ashaway, R.I.) had a chance in the 68th minute, but he hit the cross bar to keep the score even. Freshman Patrick Schoellig (Stormville, N.Y.) made a key stop in the 75th minute to keep the game even at 1-1 and 10 minutes later freshman David Czubat (Rocky Hill, Conn.) found Morgan for the eventual winner. There was a controversial ending with Mitchell believing to secure a penalty in the 88th minute, however the whistle wasn't blown as the Hawks escaped with the win.
Post Game Press
"I wasn't really thinking", said senior Kellijah Morgan (Kingston, Jamaica) on the game-winning goal. "I had the goal in the first half and thought that the game was in control, but they got an equalizer out of nothing and I kind of decided that I am not planning to lose today. Especially after a hard game on Saturday, we wanted to show the fans that we still got this so I decided to do something and I was happy it was a goal. The game on Saturday put a fire in our stomachs, being undefeated for so long and then having the wind taken out of your sails. It kind of motivated us to go out and get the win today and we have to go into Saturday confidently."

Inside the Numbers:
  • Morgan netted his third and fourth goal of the season in the win, while Quinones registered his third assist.
  • Czubat collected his first collegiate point with the assist to Morgan on the winner.
  • Freshman Cristian Vitti (Stamford, Conn.) made the start for the Hawks in net playing 45 minutes of shutout play. Schoellig picks up his first collegiate win making a single stop.
