Hartford Falls to Curry College in a 78-57 Loss

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  - The Hartford women's basketball team falls to Curry College this Saturday afternoon in a tough battle at home, with a final score of 78-57.

Rapid Recap:

  • Sophomore Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) knocked down the opening three of the game to get the ball rolling for the Hawks, the Colonels answered within the next ten seconds with a three of their own. The Colonels hit some big plays in the next minutes taking the lead with 05:29 remaining in the first quarter, 11-7. That was until sophomore Sidnee Bowden (Canton, Ohio) put up a clean three, shortly after freshman Mikaela Williams (Windsor, Conn.) slammed down a three for herself. With just 01:21 remaining Bowden kept this three point rally going with her second three of the quarter. The Hawks finished the first up seven points, 22-15.
  • In the second quarter, sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) entered the game with a strong presence putting away a three, Hawks continued to lead 25-19. The next minutes were full court rebound battles with important snags by freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.) and sophomore Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.). The Colonels closed the lead forcing the Hawks into foul trouble, the Colonels were able to take the lead 28-27 with 03:18 remaining. The two teams defended the hoop well and O'Hare closed out the half with a good free throw, the Hawks still trailed just two points 32-30. 
  • The third quarter was a battle of lead changes, Naszimento dominated in the paint grabbing key rebounds and putting away layups to keep the Hawks in this match. The Colonels were on fire from beyond the arc to put quality distance from the Hawks ending this quarter 54-43.
  • The Hawks were unable to put away early points in the opening minutes to stop the Colonels momentum, they strengthened their lead to 60-46 with 08:09 remaining in the match. Blevins and Williams for the Hawks were solid in the paint and up and down the court making plays happen off of aggressive steals. It was a free throw shoot-out late in this game, the Colonels were stellar from the line today and sealed their lead ending the day 78-57 over the Hawks. 

Inside the Numbers:
  • Naszimento led the Hawks today both offensively and defensively. She put away an impressive 12 points (6-11 FG, 0-2 FT, 0-0 3PT) and snagged 13 rebounds. O'Hare was the next leader for the Hawks taking home nine points (2-6 FG, 4-6 FT, 1-2 3-PT). Freshman Maya Okoro (Frisco, Texas) had seven points (3-6 FG, 1-1 FT, 0-0 3-PT) and grabbed six rebounds off the board. 
  • Kylie McCarthy for the Colonels led the team with 18 points (5-10 FG, 6-7 FT, 2-5 3PT) and seven rebounds. 
  • The Colonels were 21-24 at the FT line while the Hawks were 9-18. There were also 11 lead changes throughout this match-up.

The Hawks will hit the road and face off against Suffolk University this Wednesday January 15th at 5:30 p.m.
