BEVERLY, Mass. - The Hartford men's basketball team played Endicott College in an instant classic on Saturday afternoon as the Gulls pulled off the 104-100 win in overtime.
Rapid Recap:
- Junior Drew Stack (Madison, N.J.) netted his first three of the game to kick off the afternoon, however Endicott would score the next eight points to lead 8-3 early. Stack stopped the run with another three triples as the Hawks closed the deficit to 14-12 with 14:52 to play. The Gulls maintained the lead, but an and-one bucket by freshman Jaron Broomfield (Bronx, N.Y.) kept Hartford trailing by three with 10:18 to play in the first half. Endicott pushed the lead to 34-22, but the Hawks responded with a 7-0 spurt to cut the lead to just five points with 5:08 to play in the first half. The teams would trade baskets for the remaining five minutes with the Gulls holding a seven point advantage into the break.
- Sophomore Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished a layup to kick off the second half, but the Gulls responded with five-straight to push the lead to 11. Freshman Troy Santos (Taunton, Mass.) would score the next six points, including an old fashioned three-point play as part of a 8-0 Hartford run as the lead dropped back to 51-48. Endicott continued to answer the Hawk runs getting the lead back to 11 points with 13:57 to play. Hartford continued to hang around responding with a 17-5 run capped off by a sophomore Kaosi Chijioke (Atlanta, Ga.) bucket to give the Hawks a 71-69 point lead. The teams traded runs with Stack knocking down two threes to hold a 83-82 lead with 2:25 to play. Santos added an and-one bucket to get the lead to 86-82, but the Gulls held in strong getting four free throws to tie the game at 86-86 as we headed to overtime.
- The teams traded buckets including a huge three from Chijioke to even the score at 93-93 with 1:47 to play. The 11th three of the game for Stack kept the game at 96-96, but the Gulls got clutch bucket after clutch bucket pulling out the 104-100 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Stack broke the single-game record for three-pointers in a game scoring a career-high 34 points (11-18 FG, 11-17 3PT, 1-1 FT) to go with four boards and three steals. Chijioke registered a monster game putting up a career-best 26 points (9-17 FG, 2-4 3PT, 6-6 FT), to go with a career-high 15 rebounds and four assists. Santos tallied 18 points (6-20 FG, 2-8 3PT, 4-4 FT) and five assists, while Petion added eight points (4-8 FG), nine rebounds and three assists.
- Marcus Montagnino paced the Gulls registering a triple-double on 33 points (11-16 FG, 1-2 3PT, 10-13 FT), 13 assists and 11 rebounds. Elijah Kinney added 18 points (6-13 FG, 1-1 3PT, 5-6 FT) and 14 rebounds in the win.
- The Hawks were a scorching 16-32 from behind the arc in the loss, while the Gulls earned a 34-30 paint scoring advantage in the win.
