Hawks Women's Basketball Runs Past Nichols College

DUDLEY, Mass. - The Hartford women's basketball team improved to 4-1 in Conference of New England (CNE) play on Tuesday night defeating Nichols College by a 97-81 final. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Bison took an early 18-5 lead over the first six minutes of game time. The Hawks responded in a big way with the final 10 points of the first quarter highlighted by three points a piece for sophomore Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Ava Naszimento (Secacus, N.J.) as Nichols took a 18-15 lead into the second quarter. 
  • Freshman Maya Okoro (Frisco, Texas) kicked off the second quarter with back-to-back buckets as the game was knotted at 19-19. The Hawks jumped in front for the first time at the 6:29 mark of the second quarter as sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) netted a triple to get the 28-26 advantage. Another Sabia three-pointer kept the Hawks in front 36-33 with 3:18 to play in the half, but Nichols would have a strong close to the quarter to lead 45-42 into the break. 
  • Blevins and sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) each buried threes to keep the Hawks within one point to start the third quarter. Hartford found themselves down 56-52 with 4:26 to play in the quarter, before a huge 13-0 Hawk run pushed the visitors in front by nine points. The visitors held the 67-60 lead into the final 10 minutes. 
  • Sophomore Kristen Trembley (Granby, Mass.) netted a three followed by three free throws by Blevins pushed the Hawk lead to 76-63 with 8:27 to play. Okoro continued the run with a paint finish before Sabia capped off the spurt with a three as the lead moved to 18 points. The Bison tried to chip away cutting the Hawk lead to 89-77 with 3:31 to play, but Hartford stayed strong holding off for the eventual 97-81 win.

"It was battle, but we came together as a team for the win", said freshman Maya Okoro (Frisco, Texas). 

Inside the Numbers:
  • Okoro led the way for the Hawks with a career-high 16 points (8-15 FG) to go with 12 rebounds and a block. Sabia led Hartford scoring with 19 points (6-16 FG, 3-7 3PT, 4-5 FT), to go with 10 boards. Blevins posted a season-high 18 points (4-9 FG, 3-7 3PT, 7-7 FT) to go with three assists and three rebounds. Freshman Mikaela Williams (Windsor, Conn.) tallied 11 points (4-9 FG, 3-7 FT) and four assists, while sophomore Kendall Rieman (Chicago, Ill.) added eight points (3-4 FG, 2-4 FT), 11 rebounds and four assists. 
  • Abrianna Vazquez led the Bison with 39 points (11-29 FG, 5-12 3PT, 12-13 FT) and three rebounds. She also eclipsed 2,000 points in her career in the loss. 
  • The Hawks had 39 points from reserves compared to just 13 from Nichols. Hartford also dominated the paint with 48 points compared to just 32 from the Bison.
  • Hartford has now won five of the last six games on the season.
