PAXTON, Mass. - The Hartford volleyball team won a crucial match away from home Tuesday night, taking down Anna Maria College 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-11).
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set, capped off by an ace from freshman Mattea Cosby (Enfield, Conn.). The AMCATS fought back, though, trading points back and forth with the Hawks. That was until sophomore Gabriella Caucci (Bristol, Conn.) strung together three consecutive aces to force Anna Maria to call their first timeout. That would not stop the bleeding, however, as Hartford would continue their run even further, scoring seven of the next nine points backed by Caucci's impressive service game. Despite another timeout from Anna Maria, the Hawks would not relent, dominating the end of the set which was capitalized by back-to-back aces from junior Jordan Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.), ending the first set with a score of 25-11.
- Hartford's dominance would carry over into the second set, as they would jump out to a 12-2 lead headlined by three consecutive aces by Cosby. The AMCATS attempted to fight back, gaining a bit of momentum before a kill by freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.) would stop them dead in their tracks. Anna Maria attempted to stop the bleeding with a timeout, but it was no use as the Hawks dominated to a 25-8 second set win.
- The third set started similarly to the previous two sets with Hartford jumping out to another early lead, giving Anna Maria a tough hill to climb out of the gates. Senior captain Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas) would assist on four kills as the Hawks jumped ahead 9-5. Hartford would then go on a 6-0 run thanks to Caucci's impressive service once again. From that point on, the ending was a formality as the Hawks would cruise to another set win 25-11, ending the match in straight sets.
