Hawks Women's Soccer Blows by Wentworth Institute of Technology 6-1

BOSTON, Mass. - The Hartford women's soccer team picked up a massive win on Saturday defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology 6-1. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Leopards had the first giant chance in the 11th minute as Jordan Dahan had a chance that forced a diving stop by senior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.). Hartford would jump in front in the 24th minute as junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.) would score on a corner kick over the diving keeper. A minute later the lead doubled as Hartford was awarded a penalty kick which senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.) placed past Shyla Kulesza. In the 31st minute the lead grew to 3-0 as Opdenbrouw scored again on an assist by freshman Anastasia Nerney (Glocester, R.I.). Wentworth would not get another opportunity in the rest of the half as the lead was 3-0. 
  • Hartford took control of possession early in the second half as Nerney would get in another goal with an assist to Opdenbrouw. The 65th minute brought the 5th goal as Nerney scored yet again on a feed from Opdenbrouw as Hartford was cruising with a 5-0 lead. Three minutes later the Hawks got its last goal of the game as senior Cameryn Wilkinson (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored on a feed from Brush. The Leopards would get the only goal in the 88th minute as Emily Hagen scored on an assist by Dahan. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Opdenbrouw scored six points in the win on two goals and two assists. Rebecca now leads the conference in points with 34 on the season. 
  • Nerney continues her Conference of New England (CNE) Rookie of the Year campaign scoring twice with another assist. Brush tallied a goal and an assist in her first game back from a red card. Wilkinson added her sixth goal of the season as the final scorer. 
  • Johnson picked up the win making three saves for the Hawks. With the win Sejal has hit 40 career wins in net. 
  • Hartford out shot Wentworth 24-5 with a 12-4 on target differential. 
Playoff Standings:
The Hawks currently sit in the #3 seed in the CNE playoff picture with a single game left. If Hartford were to win the game against Curry College the lowest seed they could finish is the #2 seed with a chance at the top seed.
