Hartford Women's Soccer Cruises to Senior Day Victory

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford women's soccer team celebrated senior day on Saturday defeating Gordon College 5-1. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks jumped ahead in the 3rd minute as junior Kathleen Brush (Wethersfield, Conn.) and senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.) combined on a short corner which saw Opdenbrouw launching a shot over the keepers head for the lead. Just six minutes later the lead doubled as senior Mayson Massaro (Sarasota, Fla.) sent a shot to the back post on a pass from Opdenbrouw. The Scots tried to get on the board to cut the lead in half as Eowyn Lapp had shot saved by senior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.). In the 30th minute the lead grew further as Brush's corner found the foot of freshman Anastasia Nerney (Glocester, R.I.) to give the home team a 3-0 advantage. Gordon would continue to try and chip away but they would only register one shot on target in the first 45 minutes. 
  • The Scots would get a goal right back in the 48th minute as Ava Forbes-Smith finished a penalty to cut the lead to 3-1. In the 52 minute the Hawks jumped back in control as Brush took a shot that bounced off the keeper to find the foot of Massaro for the goal. Gordon would gte the next two shots in the half both being stopped by Johnson. In the 77th minute the Hawks added insurance as Brush blasted a goal on an assist by sophomore Angela Chávez (Glastonbury, Conn.). Hartford would hold out in the final 13 winning by the 5-1 margin. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Massaro led the offense with a brace on senior day getting two goals. Brush added a goal and two assists, while Opdenbrouw added a goal and a helper. Nerney finished home the last goal with the other assist going to Chávez. 
  • Johnson picked up the win making four saves in 78 minutes. Sophomore Aislyn Rivera (Morristown, N.J.) finished the game with 12 minutes without registering a save. 
  • The Hawks out shot the Scots 18-7 with a 8-5 on target advantage.

The Hawks will go on the road to Biddeford, Maine on October 8th with a 2:00 PM game against the University of New England.
