Nerney's Brace Pushes Hawks Past the University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Hartford women's soccer team picked up their third-straight Conference of New England (CNE) victory on Wednesday defeating the University of New England by a 2-1 final.

Rapid Recap:

  • The Nor'easters had the advantage in the early going getting four shots in the first 10 minutes drawing a single save by senior Sejal Johnson (Weddington, N.C.). Hartford would get three shots in the first 20 minutes all missing the target. Johnson would make another easy save in the 18th minute and later in the 30th minute as the game stayed even at zero. Sejal would step up and make one final save in the 41st minute as the teams would hit the break still scoreless.
  • In the 56th minute the Hawks struck first as senior Rebecca Opdenbrouw (Vernon, Conn.) had a cross blocked by a defender which would find the foot of freshman Anastasia Nerney (Glocester, R.I.) who finished the shot in the bottom corner to give Hartford the lead. In the 72nd minute Johnson was finally beat as Gillian McGee had a cross find a perfect placement drifting to the top corner to tie up the game again. Both teams would continue to trade opportunities as we approached the 80th minute still stuck at 1-1. Nerney would break the tie in the 84th minute beating a one-on-one opportunity before again placing the ball in the bottom corner to give Hartford the winner. The Nor'easters would not get another opportunity in the final six minutes as the Hawks picked up a much needed win.
