PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Hartford field hockey team got back in the win column on Tuesday night defeating Manhattanville University by a 2-1 final in overtime.
Rapid Recap:
- The Valiants and Hawks each did not have a single shot on target after the first quarter. Hartford had a single penalty corner, while Manhattanville had two after the first 15 minutes.
- In the second 15 minutes both teams still did not have a shot on target with senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) getting the lone shot in the period for the visitors, but it pushed wide.
- In the 34th minute the Valiants would get in front as Emma Masie pushed a goal past the Hawks goalie on an assist by Keira Guinan. Seven minutes later the Hawks would respond as freshman Kyra Benard (Agawam, Mass.) would score on an assist by senior Mikayla Mathews (Pittsgrove, N.J.) as the game would be even again. The Valiants would almost get in front, but the goal was called back as the score was 1-1 headed into the fourth.
- In the final 15 minutes sophomore Nicole Ciampa (Jefferson, N.J.) stepped up big making two big saves in the 48th minute. Manhattanville would get one final chance in the 59th minute but Ciampa made a huge save again as the teams would head to overtime.
- In the first overtime Benard had two chances early, but Hannah Doherty came in clutch stopping both shots. Freshman Ashley Taylor (South Deerfield, Mass.) and freshman Natalie Haluch (Belchertown, Mass.) added chances in the 65th minute that were turned away by Doherty. In the second ten minutes of overtime Ciampa came in clutch again stopped a shot by Guinan in the 71st minute. Benard would get the game winner in the 80th minute with 24 seconds till shootout beating a one-on-one opportunity before besting the goalie to secure the win.

- Benard picked up a pair of goals for the Hawks in the win as she now has a team-leading seven so far this season.
- Mathews picked up her first collegiate point with the assist in the third quarter.
- Ciampa made five saves to pick up her first collegiate win.
- The Valiants out shot the Hawks 15-10 as both teams had six shots on target.

The Hawks will travel to Providence on Saturday to take on Johnson & Wales University with a 1:00 PM start.
