Hawks Drop Tight Match Against Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Hartford field hockey team hit the road on Saturday afternoon, facing Johnson & Wales in non-conference action. Despite a strong defensive effort, the Hawks ultimately fell to the Wildcats, 2-0.

Rapid Recap:

  • Scoring action did not kick off until the second period. In the opening 73 seconds Ava Gaudette scored for the Wildcats, this came after a strong defensive effort made my Hartford sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Ciampa (Jefferson, N.J.) facing penalty corners and rapid shots within the opening seconds of the quarter. The Wildcats took the lead 1-0. JWU continued to use their offensive momentum to their advantage forcing Ciampa to make diving saves to pull the Hawks out of this period, facing seven shots from the Wildcats sticks. The intensity rose on the field as JWU Hannah Geil was penalized with a green card late in the second.
  • This did not stop the Wildcats as they opeend yet another quarter with a goal, this time from Rayne Millett to cushion their lead to 2-0. The Hawks were able to build one chance this period when senior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) forced the Wildcats goalkeep off her heels and set up senior Mikayla Matthews (Pittsgrove, N.J.) to take a shot as well. Both shots were blocked and the Wildcats ran away in this period continuing to lead.
  • The Hawks were unable to build any offensive power in this final period, yet their defensive strength spoke volumes. The Hawks faced ten shots in the fourth quarter along with two penalty corners. The team communicated and defended well to hold the deficit to just two. Final score stood, 2-0 JWU.

Inside the Numbers:
  • In the frame, Ciampa put up 16 saves for the Hawks setting her new season and career high while playing all of the 60 minutes.
