Hawks Fall in Straight Sets to Wentworth Institute of Technology

BOSTON, Mass. The Hartford Volleyball team traveled to beantown to take on the Wentworth Institute of Technology in a match that would only see three sets, as Wentworth would capture all three sets and come out victorious. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Hawks would play from behind early going down 5-1 to start the first set, but with the help of kills from freshman Lauren Johnson (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman Camille Earl (Houston, Texas.) would put the Hawks up 6-5 in the early goings of the match. Wentworth would respond in a massive way with a big run at the midpoint, turning their 14-10 lead to a 21-10 lead. This defecit would be too much to bear, as the Leopards would take set one 25-11.
  • In the second set, it would be the Hawks who would take the early advantage going up 8-3 to start the second set, with kills again coming from Johnson and Earl. Wentworth would be able to shrink the lead bringing the game within two at 10-8. Wentworth would then go on a 13-6 run, and although Hartford would notch another couple kills from Earl, Johnson, and senior Julianna Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.). They would not be able to regain the lead as Wentworth would go on to win the second set 25-19.
  • Hartford and WIT would trade blows to begin the third set, going back and forth, as the Hawks would see kills from Johnson again, as well as junior Jenna Murphy (Easthampton, Conn.). With the score at 7-6, Wentworth would begin to pull away as a big 15-6 run would give them a 22-12 advantage. The Hawks were not ready to give up just yet, as kills from Earl and Johnson, as well as a pair of service aces from Robinshaw and her senior counterpart Kylee Connally (Dallas, Texas.) would put them within five 23-18. However, with only two points left to win the match Wentworth would secure two kills, the third set, and the match 25-18.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Johnson lead the Hawks in kills with eight, as well as finishing with a block assist and three digs.
  • Connally would lead the Hawks in assists with 12, as well as notching two service aces.
  • Je. Murphy would end with six kills and two blocks assisted. 
  • Earl would end with five kills and a dig through three sets.
  • Robinshaw would end with 11 digs, as well as a kill, and a service ace.
