WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford volleyball team lost to Roger Williams University Hawks in a Conference of New England (CNE) match-up in straight sets on Wednesday night. The loss brings the Hawks to 7-15 overall and 2-7 in CNE play.
Rapid Recap:
- The first set began with Roger Williams jumping out to an early advantage, though Hartford was keeping things close. That was until Roger Williams went on a stretch that saw them win seven of the next nine points, making the score 13-6. Even with the efforts of junior captain Kalle Legassey (Prospect, Conn.) sparking a three-point run thanks to her impressive service, the hole was too much for the Hawks to overcome as they would drop the first set with a score of 25-17.
- The second set started much more evenly, as the two teams were tied 6-6 after the first 12 points. That was until Roger Williams would win the next five consecutive points. The Hawks tried to claw their way back once more, bringing the set to just a two-point disadvantage thanks to an ace from senior Juliana Robinshaw (South Windsor, Conn.), but it was too little too late. They would drop the second set with a score of 25-17.
- The third set started with Hartford jumping out early with a quick 5-1 lead. The team seemed fired up, having dropped the first two sets. Roger Williams would not go down easily, however, as they would storm back, bringing it to a one-point game almost immediately. The two sides would trade points back and forth, neither establishing a foothold in the set. During this stretch, junior Jenna Murphy (East Hampton, Conn.) was crucial for Hartford's success as she was a part of multiple blocks and gathered three kills to her name. With the score knotted at 20-20, it would be Roger Williams who would break away towards the end, brutally stealing the set from the home team. The final set ended 25-22 in favor of Roger Williams.
