WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Hartford men's basketball team dropped their first Conference of New England (CNE) game of the year on Saturday falling to Gordon College by a 91-76 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Scot ran away with the game in the first four minutes picking up a 12-2 lead, before senior Kent Olewiler (York, Pa.) stopped the run with a layup. Gordon would continue with the momentum holding a 20-7 lead after six and a half minutes played. Hartford would respond with an 8-2 run capped off with a paint finish by junior Joshua Petion (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but the Scots would slow the game down once again holding a 28-17 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half. Junior Kyle Winters (Corte Madera, Calif.) would make a pull-up jumper to cut the lead down to nine once again with 4:53 to play, but Gordon would get a closing punch ending the half with a 19-8 run to lead 49-29 into halftime.
- The Scots would continue to control the game holding a 58-38 lead after four more minutes of action. Hartford continued to try and chip away, but Gordon continued to answer with the lead staying at 21 points with 11:15 to play. Winters kick started a 8-1 run as the deficit was trimmed to just 71-57 with 9:07 left. The Scots continued to try and hold on as the Hawks would continue their push. Olewiler would drill a triple followed by another for senior Drew Stack (Madison, N.J.) as Hartford was within 79-70. Gordon would answer with a three of their own with 3:24 to play. The Hawks would not get within single digits again losing by the 91-76 margin.
Inside The Numbers:
- Olewiler led Hartford in the loss with 15 points (6-12 FG, 1-4 3PT, 2-2 FT) and 10 rebounds. Winters led the scoring contributing 17 points (7-15 FG, 1-6 3PT, 2-2 FT), to go with four assists and four boards. Junior Kaosi Chijioke (Suwanee, Ga.) returned to action after missing the last six games putting in 13 points (4-13 FG, 1-5 3PT, 4-5 FT), and seven rebounds.
- Isaac Jarvis led the Scots in the win with 16 points (2-4 FG, 12-18 FT), eight rebounds and two blocks. Drew Brander added 12 points (5-15 FG, 1-2 3PT, 1-2 FT), 10 rebounds and five assists in the victory.
- Gordon led the game for the whole duration of this one, holding a 25-17 free throw advantage in the win. The Scots also finished the game shooting 50.0% (8-16) from deep while Hartford struggled from behind the arc finishing at 16.1% (5-31).
