Hartford Fall Short at Roger Williams 61-49

BRISTOL, R.I. - The Hawks women's basketball team could not complete the season sweep of Roger Williams University on Tuesday night dropping the Conference of New England (CNE) match up by a 61-49 score.

Rapid Recap:
  • Sophomore Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) kicked off the scoring by netting a three, followed by a layup by freshman Maddie MacCannell (Portsmouth, N.H.) as the Hartford Hawks led early by a 7-2 margin. Roger Williams used a 7-0 run to jump in front by bucket, but sophomore Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) netted a bucket to even the score. Sophomore Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) scored the last bucket for UHart, but RWU held a 15-11 lead at the end of the quarter. 
  • Naszimento finished two more layups in the paint to cut the deficit to 18-15, but the home team continued to extend the lead as it blossomed to 22-15. Freshman MacKenzie Hohulin (Plymouth, Mass.) finished a layup after another by Naszimento to keep the game within three points, but again Roger Williams extended the advantage to 29-20 with 3:08 to play in the half. Freshman Maya Okoro (Frisco, Texas) scored the last bucket of the first half with a tip-in as Hartford trailed by seven headed into the break.
  • Naszimento and MacCannell continued to keep the Hawks within striking distance combining for six of the first eight points for Hartford as the lead was 35-30 for Roger Williams. The second half of the third quarter was all RWU going on a 9-2 run to push the advantage to 12 before freshman Mikaela Williams (Windsor, Conn.) scored the last bucket of the period with two seconds left. 
  • Sabia and Williams combined for the first two buckets of the fourth quarter, but Roger Williams had a six 44-38 advantage with 8:17 to play. The teams traded baskets as the lead held at seven points with 3:04 to play. Freshman Emma O'Hare (Drexel Hill, Pa.) finished a layup to trim the deficit to five points, but Roger Williams would take over scoring the next nine to push the game out of reach for the win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Naszimento continues to put together good efforts scoring 14 points (7-10 FG) to go with four rebounds and a block. MacCannell tallied six points (2-6 FG, 2-2 FT) to go with eight rebounds and two assists. O'Hare added seven points (3-6 FG, 1-2 3PT), four rebounds and three steals. 
  • Elizabeth Dufrane led Roger Williams with 16 points (5-15 FG, 0-3 3PT, 6-6 FT), four steals and two blocks. Chloe Richardson added 16 points (6-14 FG, 2-5 3PT, 2-2 FT) and four steals in the win.
  • RWU scored 21 points off of turnovers forcing Hartford into 27 turnovers, while UHart scored 12 points off of 11 Roger Williams turnovers. 
  • Hartford's bench continues to play well outscoring Roger Williams 19-3 in the loss.
Playoff Implications:
  • Hartford currently sits in the five seed at 7-8 in CNE play, while Roger Williams moves up the number three seed at 12-3 in CNE play. As currently stands the Hawks of Hartford would travel to the the four seeded University of New England in the first round of the playoffs.
