FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The University of Hartford baseball team finished off the Armstrong Invitational on Sunday falling to Hanover College by a 14-12 margin at Methodist University in North Carolina.
Rapid Recap:
- The Panthers jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch. Hartford would respond in the bottom of the second inning as junior Joshua Kaplan (Suffern, N.Y.) singled home two runs to give the Hawks the lead. Sophomore Alek Popovich (Rochdale, Mass.) brought home another run on an error to score sophomore Joe Guglielmino (Simsbury, Conn.) who walked to get on base. Hanover jumped right back in front in the top of the third inning getting three runs on a bases clearing double to lead 4-3 after three innings.
- In the bottom of the fourth the Hawks pushed back in front getting a run on a ribby single by sophomore JJ Romatzick (Stratford, Conn.) before junior Jackson Ciccone (Danbury, Conn.) plated another run with a base knock to right field. The Panthers battled right back getting three runs in the top half of the fifth to earn the 7-5 advantage. Hartford jumped right back in front in the bottom half of the inning as Romatzick got hit by a pitch to plate the sixth run, before Popovich launched a grand slam over the right field wall to push the game to 10-7 Hartford.
- In the sixth Hanover continued to chip away plating three more runs on just a single hit in the half inning to knot the game at 10-10. The bats slowed down for both clubs until the eighth inning as the Panthers would tack on four runs on just two hits and a crucial error in the field. Down by four runs the Hawks tried to make a comeback as graduate student Jake Santiago (Bristol, Conn.) belted a moon shot to centerfield to trim the deficit to 14-12. The Hawks could not complete the comeback in the ninth to fall to 1-2 in the season.
On the Mound:
- Freshman Justin Gouin (North Haven, Conn.) got the start going two innings of work allowing three runs on zero hits, four walks and three wild pitches to go with two strikeouts. Junior Logan Huzi (Trumbull, Conn.) followed with a single inning allowing a single run while striking out a pair. Freshman Jeffrey Blake (Hopewell, N.J.) was next allowing three runs over five outs. Senior Teague Mulcahy (Bayonne, N.J.) got the final out of the fifth inning allowing two runs. Junior Jeremy Mangiameli (Middlefield, Conn.) was next in line tossing a single inning allowing a run with two strikeouts. Freshman Christian Kells (Madison, Conn.) picked up the loss hurling two innings allowing four runs (zero earned) with three punch outs. Junior Michael Featherstone (Ramsey, N.J.) finished off the game with a clean inning and two strikeouts.
At the Plate:
- Romatzick continues his stellar play going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Popovich belted his second long ball of the year to bring home four runs in a 1-for-3 day. Sophomore Zaynn Godbee (Hartford, Conn.) added a 2-for-5 performance with two runs scored and a double.
