MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Hartford softball team made a statement in their first day in Florida at the Space Coast Spring Games sweeping Fitchburg State University and Webster University to kick off the eight game slate.
Rapid Recap Fitchburg State University (W 6-0):
- The Hawks jumped ahead in the first as senior Olivia Wolk (Sugarloaf, Pa.) tripled home sophomore Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) to give Hartford a 1-0 advantage. In the circle junior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) was dominant through three innings going nine up nine down with five strikeouts. In the bottom of the third Hartford would add on two more runs as freshman Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) singled home senior Sarah Serrano (Windsor, Conn.) who kicked off the inning with a base hit of her own. Wolk would add a second RBI of the day to push the lead to 3-0 on her second triple of the day.
- The Hawks continued to add insurance in the fifth inning getting three more runs across. It started with a sacrifice fly by sophomore Bridget Bernard (North Andover, Mass.), followed by a RBI double by Zobel and finally a sacrifice fly by sophomore Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn.). Hartford's pitching was excellent not allowing a single run and only allowing four hits as the Hawks prevailed 6-0.
In the Circle:
- Mayhood picked up her second win of the season tossing five innings with a season-best nine strikeouts while only allowing two hits. Zobel closed the game going two shutout innings with three punch outs and two hits allowed.
At The Plate:
- Wolk became the program-record holder for triples in a career going 2-for-3 with the two triples and two RBI. She now has hit for 10 three-baggers in her career. Zobel went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, while Serrano went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

Rapid Recap Webster University (W 9-2):
- The Hawks continued the hot hitting in the top of the first getting a quick run as Sealey scored on a passed ball. Freshman Lucy Lembo (Albany, N.Y.) followed with a three-run inside the park home run to give Hartford a 4-0 lead after the top of the first. The Gorloks added a single run in the bottom of the first on a RBI triple.
- After a clean second inning the Hawks were flying again plating four more runs in the third. It started with a RBI single by junior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) to score Wolk. Miccio would later steal home part of a double steal to bring home the sixth run. Bernard added a sacrifice fly to score Lembo, before freshman Katrina Baran (Townsend, Del.) singled home junior Anita Farkash (Seaford, N.Y.) to give Hartford the 8-1 lead.
- Sealey would come in relief with two shutdown innings before Webster would tack on a second run in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single as the Hartford lead was cut to 8-2 after five. Miccio would get the Hawks a late insurance run stealing home again on a double steal as Hartford would hold on for the 9-2 victory.
In the Circle:
- Sophomore Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start going two innings with two strikeouts and an earned run. Sealey picked up the win hurling four innings with two strikeouts and a run allowed (unearned). Zobel closed things out with two punch outs in a scoreless seventh.
At The Plate:
- Lembo had an impressive performance going 3-for-4 with the three RBI inside the park homer. Miccio went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three stolen bases. Farkash added a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored.
Up Next:
The Hawks return to action tomorrow in Florida with a game against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 12:15 PM before taking on Nebraska Wesleyan University at 2:30 PM.
