Hawks Defeat Western Connecticut State University in Split of Day 3 of Space Coast Spring Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. -  The Hartford softball team picked up their fifth win of the season on Monday night defeating Western Connecticut State University 7-6 in the second game of the two-game slate. 

Rapid Recap Millikin University (L 4-0):
  • The teams were locked in a pitching duel as junior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) threw four shutout innings for the Hawks, while Emily Reagan for the Blue held Hartford hit less through four innings.
  • Millikin took the lead in the top half of the fifth getting a RBI single. The Hawks would get a runner to third base in the bottom of the fifth, but sophomore Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn.) would not come around to score.
  • The lead expanded to 4-0 in the top of he seventh as a pair of defensive errors helped the Blue push across three more insurance runs. The Hawks would get a pair of runners on base in the seventh inning, but could not muster a run losing 4-0. 
In the Circle:
  • Mayhood picked up her third loss of the year after throwing 5.2 innings of work allowing one run (unearned) with two strikeouts. Sophomore Alex Hassett (Granby, Conn.) came in relief getting four outs while allowing three runs (one earned) with a strikeout. 
At The Plate:
  • Matz, senior Olivia Wolk (Sugarloaf, Pa.) and senior Sarah Serrano (Windsor, Conn.) had the lone hits for the Hawks in the loss. 
Rapid Recap Western Connecticut State Unviersity (W 7-6):
  • The Hawks jumped ahead early as sophomore Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) tripled and then scored on a RBI ground out by freshman Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.). The lead grew to 3-0 in top of the second as sophomore Adelie Beebe (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) each came around to score on a wild pitch and error by the catcher after singling to get on base. The Wolves answered in the bottom half of the inning getting two runs on three hits to get within a single run. 
  • In the fourth inning Miccio tripled and later scored on a ground out by freshman Lucy Lembo (Albany, N.Y.) as the lead was pushed back to 4-2. In the top of the fifth, Serrano stole home to give the Hawks a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame West Conn answered getting four runs on four hits and a defensive error to take a 6-5 lead.
  • In the top of the seventh the Hawks took the lead back as junior Lauren Ackerman (North Branford, Conn.) tripled after pinch hitting. Serrano followed with a huge clutch single to tie the score. Serrano would then steal second, before Sealey would bring her home on a rocket single up the middle. In the bottom of the frame the Hawks held strong as Sealey closed out the game to get the win. 
In the Circle:
  • Zobel got the start for the Hawks tossing 4.1 innings allowing six runs on seven hits with a career-high seven strikeouts. Sophomore Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) picked up the win going 1.2 innings without allowing a run with a pair of punch outs. Sealey picked up the save with a scoreless seventh inning.
At The Plate:
  • Sealey went 3-for-4, with a triple, run scored and RBI. Miccio went 2-for-3, with a triple and two runs scored. Serrano added a 2-for-3 game with two runs scored, two stolen bags and the game-tying RBI.

"Coming off of the loss in our first game, it was great to be able to rally together to pull away with the win to finish the day", said sophomore Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hills, Calif.). "I think everyone did a great job picking each other up and staying focused throughout the game and I'm excited to get back at it tomorrow to finish off our spring break!"

Up Next:
The Hawks return to action tomorrow in Florida with a game against Grinnell College at 12:15 PM and a second game against Millikin University at 2:30 PM.
