MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Hartford softball team swept the final day of action in Florida defeating Grinnell College and Millikin University.
Rapid Recap Grinnell College (W 6-5):
- The Hawks quickly jumped ahead as sophomore Adelie Beebe (Sacramento, Calif.) singled and came around to score on a senior Olivia Wolk (Sugarloaf, Pa.) double in the bottom of the first. The Pioneers would even the game in the top of the third on a RBI double. Hartford answered with a three spot in the bottom of the frame. It started with senior Azya Walker (Oak Forest, Ill.) stealing second and third before scoring on an error. Sophomore Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn.) added the next RBI singling home Wolk who tripled to get on base. Freshman Lucy Lembo (Albany, N.Y.) brought home the fourth run doubling to right center to score Matz and give the Hawks a 4-1 lead.
- Grinnell added a second run in the fourth, before getting three runs in the fifth inning on three hits to take a 5-4 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth inning the Hawks came through in the clutch again as junior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) tripled to score junior Taylor Fitch (Andover, Conn.). Senior Sarah Serrano (Windsor, Conn.) added the winning RBI hitting a sacrifice fly to plate Miccio to give the Hawks the lead. Junior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) shut the game down striking out a pair in the seventh to clinch the win.
In the Circle:
- Sophomore Gracie Hopkins (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) got the start going four innings allowing just two runs on six hits with five punch outs. Sophomore Alex Hassett (Granby, Conn.) got a single out for Hartford allowing three runs (two earned). Mayhood picked up the win tossing 2.2 innings with four strikeouts without allowing a hit.
At The Plate:
- Miccio rallied the offense going 2-for-3 with a triple, RBI and run scored. Wolk went 2-for-3 with a triple, double, RBI and run scored. Beebe added a 1-for-2 game with a run scored.
Rapid Recap Millikin University (W 11-8):
- The Big Blue jumped ahead early plating six runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning. Hartford got on the board in the top of the second on a two RBI triple by Serrano scoring Matz and freshman Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.). Millikin would get two more runs in the bottom of the second as Anna Enlow launched a two-run homer.
- In the top half of the fourth inning Miccio came through again starting another rally with a RBI double to score Zobel who also reached on a double. Miccio would later score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 8-4.
- The top of the fifth saw the full comeback for the Hawks as they scored six runs on two hits. It started with a walk of Matz with the bases loaded to score the fifth run. Miccio then delivered again with a three-run double to even the score. Hartford would get two more runs on an error by the third baseman to give the Hawks the lead. The Blue could not respond as the bats went silent. Hartford would score the 11th run in the top of the seventh to pull off the 11-8 victory.
In the Circle:
- Sophomore Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) got the start allowing six runs (five earned) in an inning. Zobel picked up her first collegiate win tossing four innings allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Mayhood collected the save tossing two shutout innings with three punch outs.
At The Plate:
- Miccio led the offense again going 2-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored and two doubles. Matz went 1-for-2, with three runs scored and a ribby. Zobel added three runs scored part of a 1-for-2 day at the plate with a double.

The Hawks return home to the northeast to take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday for a double header starting at 1:00 PM.
