Hawks Defeat FDU - Florham for First Win of 2025

MADISON, N.J. - The University of Hartford women's lacrosse team hung on to defeat the Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham Devils 12-7 in a match that ended after three quarters due to conditions. 

Rapid Recap:

  • The Hawks jumped ahead 2-0 after goals by sophomore Laurel McIntosh (West Kingston, R.I.) and sophomore Katie Graham (Colchester, Conn.). The Devils answered with a goal with 7:59 to play in the first quarter, but Hartford would respond with four-straight goals to jump ahead 6-1 after the first quarter. 
  • Senior Meghan Smith (Orange, Conn.) kicked off the second quarter with her second goal of the day followed by an assist to junior Sara Costa (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) for her second goal of the day as the Hawks led 8-1. Smith finished home her hat-trick followed by the 10th goal of the night for Hartford by freshman Kate Zonin (North Smithfield, R.I.) as the lead grew to nine goals. FDU - Florham stopped the run with the second goal, but McIntosh scored on a fancy find by Graham to keep the lead at 11-2 with 2:48 to play. The Devils would score a final goal in the half as the hosts trailed by eight headed into the break. 
  • FDU - Florham came out strong in the third quarter scoring three times in the opening seven minutes as the Devils trailed 11-6. McIntosh picked up the hat-trick with 3:26 to play in the quarter to stop the run. The Devils would get a final goal to cut the score to 12-7, but the end of the quarter also marked the end of the game due to weather.

"It was really tough conditions, but getting up in the beginning really helped our team hold the momentum and finish out strong", said sophomore Laurel McInstosh (West Kingston, R.I.). 

Inside The Numbers:
  • McIntosh led the attack scoring three goals including the 20th goal of her career in the win. Smith's presence was felt all over the field, ending the game with three goals and two assists to go with five ground balls and six draw controls. Graham scored twice to go with an assist, while Costa added two goals of her own.  
  • Defensively freshman Allison O'Donnell (Goshen, N.Y.) caused a turnover with three ground balls, while junior Shelby Frashure (Pasadena, Md.) collected four grounders. 
  • Between the pipes Sophomore Mandi Rivard (Vernon, Conn.) saved seven shots in the win. 
  • For the Devils Julianna Medina scored three goals, while Alexis Ashton who finished the day with a pair of goals and grounders.

The Hawks will return home on Saturday, March 8th when they take on Smith College in West Hartford at 11:00 AM.
