Hawks Split with the University of New England on Friday Night

BIDDEFORD, Maine -  The Hartford softball team split a Conference of New England (CNE) doubleheader on Friday night against the University of New England losing game one by a 3-2 final before winning game two 14-2.

Rapid Recap Game 1 (L 3-2):
  • The teams stayed 0-0 through the top of the third before the Nor'Easters took the lead on a pair on an RBI triple and RBI ground out. The Hawks finally got on the board in the top of the fifth as senior Azya Walker (Oak Forest, Ill.) singled, junior Taylor Fitch (Andover, Conn.) followed it up with a double to get Walker to third. Senior Sarah Serrano (Windsor, Conn.) hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home the first run, but Hartford still trailed 2-1.
  • In the top of the sixth the Hawks evened the score as junior Gia Miccio (Bellmore, N.Y.) homered to center to lead off the inning. The Nor'Easters scored in the bottom of the seventh to walk off the Hawks on a throwing error to win 3-2. 
In the Circle:
  • Junior Carly Mayhood (Newton, N.J.) tossed five innings allowing two runs on five hits to go with three strikeouts. Freshman Ella Zobel (Clarence, N.Y.) picked up the loss going 1.2 innings allowing a run (unearned) with two punch outs. 
At The Plate:
  • Walker led the offense going 2-for-3 with a run scored, Miccio went 1-for-3 with her first homer of the year. Serrano added a 1-for-2 day with the other ribby. 
Rapid Recap Game 2 (W 14-2):
  • The Hawks came out the gate in the second game getting two runs in the first inning. It started with senior Olivia Wolk (Sugarloaf, Pa.) singling to the pitcher to score sophomore Alexis Sealey (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) who walked to lead off the game. Sophomore Adelie Beebe (Sacramento, Calif.) brought home the second run on a sacrifice fly to score Miccio. Hartford would add a third run in the top of the second as Wolk singled home Sealey who singled and stole second. The Nor'Easters would finally get two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits and two defensive errors. 
  • The Hawks offense would explode in the top of the sixth scoring 11 runs. It started with a RBI single by Wolk. Beebe followed things up with a two ribby single. Freshman Katrina Baran (Townsend, Del.) pinch hit and singled home another run to get the game to 7-2. Sophomore Hailey Pruett (Nottingham, N.H.) picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice. Serrano brought a run home on a ground out. Sealey kept the inning going with a double to left center. Sophomore Sydney Matz (Ellington, Conn.) made it 12-2 with a RBI single. Fitch would later walk home a run followed by another RBI walk going for freshman Lucy Lembo (Albany, N.Y.) as the lead hit 12 runs. The Nor'Easters could not recover falling in the six innings by 14-2. 
In the Circle:
  • Sophomore Alex Hassett (Granby, Conn.) tossed 3.1 innings allowing two runs (zero earned) on five hits. Zobel picked up the win going 2.2 innings only allowing two hits with a pair of strikeouts. 
At The Plate:
  • Sealey went 4-for-4, with four runs, two doubles, a stolen base and two RBIs. Wolk went 3-for-4, with three ribbys and a run scored. Matz added a 2-for-4 game with two runs and a RBI. 
Up Next:
The Hawks will host Western New England University on Sunday for a doubleheader with a 12:00 PM start.
